Android 17 Beta 3 Brings Blur UI, Dark Theme Controls & Multitasking Bubbles
Google's Android 17 Beta 3 takes the visual refinements introduced in Android 16 even further, expanding blur effects across more parts of the system interface. The notification shade and Quick Settings panel now carry a more pronounced translucency that gives the UI a distinctly layered, modern aesthetic.
This isn't just a cosmetic update — the enhanced blur creates a clearer visual hierarchy, making it easier to distinguish between interface layers at a glance. It signals Google's continued push toward a polished, cohesive design language across Android.
Beta 3 also introduces a highly requested feature: per-app control over forced dark theme modes. Users can now decide which apps are allowed to be pushed into the "Expanded" dark theme, preventing awkward rendering issues that often plagued apps not optimised for dark mode.
Meanwhile, Android 17's app bubbles feature is proving to be a genuine multitasking game-changer. Floating app bubbles allow users to keep messaging apps, browsers, or email clients accessible without leaving their current app — streamlining workflows for power users who constantly switch between tasks throughout the day.
A redesigned screen recording interface, previously spotted in an Android Canary build, has now made its way into Beta 3. The new menu layout is cleaner and more intuitive, suggesting it is firmly on track to be included in the stable Android 17 release later this year.
With each successive beta, Android 17 demonstrates a clear focus on refining everyday usability — from visual polish to practical multitasking tools. The stable release, expected in the second half of 2026, looks set to deliver meaningful improvements that will benefit users across a wide range of Android devices worldwide.
